Ancient Hearts and Spades takes the classic games of hearts and spades and puts them back where they belong, in ancient times. Just a joke, this game takes two of the world’s most famous card games and gives them a surprisingly fresh new look, which is a definite upgrade from the standard game of hearts that windows fans have become used to. Personally, I never understood the rules of the game until I decided to play Ancient Hearts and Spades.
The great thing about the game is the explanation that it provides at the very beginning. With most games, there is a tutorial of sorts, but this game has a brief and to the point screen before each game. In hearts the objective that it give you is to: 1- Highest card of led suit wins the hand, 2- Win by scoring the least amount of points, 3- Heart cards are worth one point, and 4- the queen of spades is worth thirteen points. This is all the knowledge you need to succeed in Hearts, the only other thing that is included in the passing at the beginning, but that comes with experience.
The other game in the pack is spades. To be completely honest, I do not really understand this game, but it appears to be similar to Hearts. The main differences are that there are teams of two, the point is to win the most hands and that the highest spade card always wins the hand. Once a team reach 500 points (which takes a while), they win.
I thought this was a good game. The point of games like this is not to provide some groundbreaking new game of hearts or spades, but to provide a solid and reliable clone. Ancient Hearts and Spades delivers for fans of the original card game and I would give it three out of five stars.
