Star Defender 4 Review

Star Defender 4

Star Defender 4 is a massive endeavor into the vast areas of the unknown we call the universe and beyond. Its sole reason of existence is to defend earth from malicious aliens and your job is to shoot all of them out of the night sky. The 100 levels are divided into 8 huge missions with each mission ending with a boss enemy. These guys are large and bad. It takes your ship attacking many aspects of these monsters before you can take them down.

The only way to beat the aliens is to catch all the power-ups that float down the screen. Some of the weapons are the same as SD3 but there are a lot of new weapons in addition to new aliens. Some of the simpler weapons will take a couple of shots to down an enemy, but other weapons like the one that will spit out all sorts of attacks to clear most of the aliens on the screen. There are many more weapons and shields (to protect you for a short time) in SD4. In addition to your weapons, the aliens have similar ones to destroy you. One such weapon is the red laser beam. It will put you away so avoid those at all cost. If you are lucky enough, you’ll get that power-up sometime during your play. Of course, the other big thing in this game is to avoid the bombs and asteroids that will create havoc on your ship.

I didn’t think they could improve on SD3, but I was wrong. This SD4 is a great game with lots of action and playability. The graphics are fantastic and the sound accurate and loud. Who can dream up these huge, ugly monsters? I give this arcade shooter Mac game a 4.5 because if they come out with another one it will definitely be a 5.

Rating: ★★★★½
